Gold’s Gym Burns Calories to Fight Diabetes

In honor of National Diabetes Month and the launch of the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) new “Stop Diabetes” campaign, Gold’s Gym joined forces with the ADA to raise awareness to diabetes, and diabetes related diseases by setting a new world record for most calories burned within 24 hours.

On Saturday, November 7th, 2009 Gold's Gym locations around the world hosted a first-of-its-kind calorie "Burn-a-thon". The aim was to to demonstrate the need to “Do a 180” on the growing diabetes epidemic byburning 180 million calories and 50,000 Pounds in one day.

Gold’s Gym Egypt participated by inviting its members, and staff to either take place in the "Burn-a-thon". The offer was taken up enthusiastically by each and every member who was able to come to any of the 7 Gold’s Gym locations in Egypt. Participants were able to choose between contributing individually or as part of a team, each comprising of 8 people.

A calorie expenditure chart created by Gold’s Gym was on hand to help people work out how many calories they contributed to the cause. Doctors were present to give out free diabetes tests to attendants.

Everybody was vigorously burning calories for the cause; it didn’t matter whether it was 5 minutes on the treadmill, a ride on the spin bike, 20 minutes on the elliptical machine or any other cardio equipment, an hour long group exercise class or 30 minutes of lifting weights, all calories burned by exercising were counted.

The combined effort all the participants resulted in burning a staggering 275,000 calories.

By hosting the "Burn-a-thon" Gold’s Gym Egypt inspired its members to serve a cause greater than oneself by raising the awareness to diabetes and diabetes related diseases in Egypt. Thereby, Gold’s Gym Egypt once again proved to be the trendsetter and market leader in the fitness field in Egypt.

Adidas, Etisalat, Sony and Nestle eagerly participated in the "Burn-a-thon"by each sponsoring teams burning calories at Gold’s Gym Egypt’s 7 location; their generous financial donations benefit the fight against diabetes.
